National Kite Festival and Cherry Blossom Festival

Today was the kick off to the National Cherry Blossom Festival, as well as the National Marathon and the Kite Flying Festival. We decided that we would be brave and head to DC, fight the crowds and experience all the festival fun! There were tons of people and over the next 2 weeks DC is expecting atleast 1 million people to travel and see the Cherry Blossoms. The first festival we went to was the Family Day kick off event for the Cherry Blossoms. It was fun, but too crowded. Iceman did get to do a couple of crafts (japanese fan and belt). We also watched a man make an Oragami Giraffe, saw dancers, and listened to a variety of drum ensambles. After the Family kick off we headed to the Kite Festival. There were hundreds of kites all over the Mall. Tons of your average, everyday kites, and then there were bugs, animals, spaceships, pirate ships, jets, and biplanes. There was even a kite that was just a pair of legs. The batteries in my camera were already dead when we saw that kite, or I would have taken a picture. We loved all the kites! We topped off our visit to DC with a trip to the Cherry Blossom trees. They really are pretty, they look like a sea of pink all along the Potomac River. By the time we saw a few trees everyone was exhausted, hungry and ready to go. So we walked back through the kite festival and headed home.

The head band is supposed to be a Japanese Belt, but everyone was wearing it on their heads, so Iceman did too.
Coloring a fan with a Cherry Tree on it.
Iceman loved the giraffe!

Pictures of the kites around the Washington Monument. These pictures don't do it justice, it really was amazing to see all the kites all over!Just a couple of pictures of the Cherry Trees in bloom

How cool. What cool experiences you are having! What are your feelings about it coming to a close? (And when does that happen?)(And where are you going?) (And why are all of my questions in parenthesis?!)

Hey D. We checked out Army Bases that have cannon crewmembers and the closest we can get is Georgia. We get to "pick" 3 in the US and 3 out of country and we're limited with what he's doing. We picked the 2 in Georgia and one in Washington State. Then we're picking Germany, Hawaii, and Italy...we should find out about 4-5 weeks into basic training where we get stationed. Georgia is closer than Germany though, right?? :)

My parents took Heidi and I on a trip to DC about 10 years ago. It happened to be spring break and was just a couple of weeks before the cherry blossoms bloomed. We were disappointed that we just missed it. I am sure they are amazing. Brooks got accepted to another law school, Willamette. Now we just have a couple of days to decide before the we have to send in our response! No babies yet, but probably in about 3-4 weeks if everything goes okay.
