This is a description of our trip to the hospital this past weekend...
This past weekend, we had quite the adventure, if you want to call it that. Charlie woke up feeling pretty nauseous Sunday morning, she even joked (not announcing anything) that she felt pregnant. The nausea didn't seem to go away and a dull pain started to develop in her lower back, as the day progressed and the evening rolled around, the pain got worse and by the time bedtime came, the pain was accompanied by a fever. Not sure what was going on, Charlie and Maverik called our wonderful neighbor and friend to come sit with the kids (they were in bed fast asleep) while they went to urgent care to see what was up. The pain is hard to describe and was very localized in Charlie's lower/mid back, as the night progressed the pain would wrap around her right side and abdomen, but only when she would stand up. If she laid on her side the pain would decrease a little bit, to where it was bareable. It was awful, to say the least. Anyway, we sat (Charlie laid) in urgent care for 2 hours just to be told to go to the ER and that I probably had appendicitis. So we headed to the ER. By the time we got to the ER it was after midnight. By 2:30 Charlie was having a catscan done, had blood drawn, and had given a urine sample. She also received a great pain med (thank goodness) and had the IV put in at her elbow. All tests (whatever they did) came back normal and the catscan didn't pick up my appendix. So, I was admitted to the hopital on a 24 hour watch to see if I had appendicitis. This didn't make the most sense to Charlie since her pain was mainly in her back, but they seemed very confident. Before going to my room (at about 5am) they gave me another dose of pain meds and then took me to my room. Maverik, headed home to relieve the wonderful neighbor and try to get an hour of sleep before it was time to get boys off to school.
This is when all the blessings truly came rolling in. The wonderful neighbor/friend and another wonderful friend had already figured out playdates and meals for us for the next couple of days. Our boys were in great hands and our ward was so amazing at helping with everything!! This was such a stress relief for both Charlie and Maverik. Also, Maverik's work was very understanding and supportive. It is nice to know that even being away from family that we have a ward family here to take care of us and love us. We are so grateful!
Back at the hospital, Charlie is trying to sleep, keyword "trying". Every half hour someone new would come in and ask questions, hook up fluids, take vitals, ask more questions, poke at her stomache...the list goes on. It is also hard to sleep with an IV in your arm too. By 9am Charlie sat waiting for the pain to return, nothing. Her fever was gone too. The surgeon came in to see how she was and was surprised to hear that there was no pain. He basically said she was on watch, if the pain came back they would take her in for surgery, if the pain didn't come back she would be sent home. So the waiting and waiting and waiting began. By the way, when you are on watch for surgery you don't get to eat or drink anything. The last time Charlie ate was at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. Needless to say the pain never returned and Charlie sat in the hospital bed until 8:30 that night when the surgeon made his rounds again. He was surprised that the pain never came back, and she thinks a bit puzzled. Charlie asked to be released that night. She was told if she could eat food and keep it down that she could go home. It was good to eat again, (it had been about 32 hours since she ate) and the food stayed down so she went home. Final verdict...I honestly think the doctor's had no idea.
Charlie is home now and loving being with her family again. She is recovering quickly and feels her energy coming back more everyday. It has been nice to relax and enjoy snuggling and watching movies with the boys. Maverik was amazing through it all! He was "Super Dad" took care of the boys, cleaned the house, took care of Charlie, and did work stuff too.
Thank you to everyone who helped. I know there were many of you. Thank you for the prayers, the thoughts, the love...it was all felt and all made a difference.
